Pregnancy & Post-partum

For many years Osteopaths have been helping women with a variety of complaints associated with pregnancy, with preparation for labour and birth, and postpartum recovery.Osteopathy is a safe and gentle hands-on treatment for mother and baby at all stages of pregnancy and after birth, with carefully selected and comfortable techniques for this time.

While pregnancy can be remembered as a joyful, exciting time, and physically the body will be softening and stretching more easily in some areas, for some women various aches and pains can affect their pregnancy experience. Osteopaths find problems in pregnancy are often a result of previous back troubles or old injuries, which come under more strain as your body posture and mechanics start to change in response to an enlarging uterus and developing baby. Being uncomfortable or in pain during your pregnancy however, is not necessarily just something to put up with. If these issues are assessed and managed correctly then the risk of more painful problems (like sciatica and symphysis pubis dysfunction) can be minimised, and your body will adapt effectively to continued growth, making pregnancy a more enjoyable experience.

Additionally, if the mother's pelvis is mechanically unstable or lacking in mobility, it may interfere with the baby's passage through the birth canal during birth. Osteopathic treatment before birth helps to restore the balance and improve quality of movements of the whole pelvic girdle, promoting hormonal and neurological feedback, which in turn allows stimulation of the uterine contraction. Post-birth, Osteopathy can help the body to return to normal and to resolve any issues that may arise in caring for your new baby.
