PREGNANCY & POST-PARTUM

For many years, Osteopaths have been helping women with a variety of complaints associated with pregnancy, preparation for labour and birth and postpartum recovery. Osteopathy is a safe and gentle hands-on treatment with carefully selected and comfortable techniques for mother and baby at all stages of pregnancy and after birth.

Pregnancy is a joyful and exciting time for mothers. But as the body goes through the changes, some women experience various aches and pains which can affect their pregnancy experience.

Osteopathic treatment before birth can help alleviate some of the discomforts that occur because of these maternal physiologic changes. It helps to restore the balance and improve the quality of movements to allow mobility, especially in the pelvis and spine, thereby allowing an adaptable environment for the fetus to thrive. And after giving birth, Osteopathy can help the body to return to normal and to resolve any issues that may arise in caring for your new baby.

Some indications for treatment in pregnancy and afterwards:

  • Check-ups
  • Back or neck pain
  • Sacroiliac joint & symphysis pubis disorder
  • Rib pain
  • Indigestion and heartburn
  • Balancing your pelvis for optimal engagement and labour
  • Rebalancing your pelvis and body after birth
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Coccyx pain
  • Sciatica
  • Breathing problems
  • Headaches
  • Mastitis
  • Feeding/lifting back strain

NEWBORN & INFANTS

It is a common belief that babies and children should have no structural stresses or strains in their bodies because they are so young. The reality can be quite different. The normal birthing process is highly stimulating and in many respects traumatic event. There is a lot of pressure on the baby’s skull and twisting through the body. While this is a normal physiological process, it can lead to problems for the baby. Difficulties, such as rapid labour, prolonged labour, presentation complications, delivery by forceps/ventouse, or caesarean delivery can contribute to such problems. The effects can be seen immediately, or manifest later on in life as a toddler and into adulthood.

How osteopathy can help

Over the last 60 years, osteopathy has established an excellent reputation for helping newborns. The role of the Osteopath is to diagnose and release these tensions by applying gentle pressure. This pressure is done so subtly and softly that there is no painful sensation at all.

We are experienced working with newborns from a few days old to older children who may still have birth strain effects or recent injuries. Treatment of the newborn, especially in the first 12 weeks of life is often advisable as they have an innate drive towards normal function. This means they are very responsive to treatment and rapid changes often occur.

In a newborn assessment we will take a medical history from the parent/s and perform a pediatric examination. This includes examining all peripheral joints such as hips, knees and shoulders as well as the spine and cranium to assess range of movement and function. We will then diagnose and treat accordingly, or refer where appropriate.

On average 2 to 6 treatments are sufficient, but this may vary according to the problem.

TODDLERS TO TEENS

Osteopathy for children encourages check-ups and treatments throughout the stages of growth to ensure that young bodies are adapting appropriately, and if any issues are detected, they can be promptly addressed as they arise.

Toddlers are going through immense changes as they progress through stages of verbal communication and motor development, like learning to crawl, walk, and run. Osteopathy can help support these developmental milestones and check for any lag or asymmetry that may be occurring. It screens any detrimental effect after falls to help prevent further problems arising in the future.

Children of school age may be experiencing difficulty with concentrating and learning. Osteopathy for children can help support the motor and cognitive development and often work alongside other health professionals to optimise progress. Osteopaths usually work with children complaining of back and joint pain, growing pains, tummy pains, and headaches, as well as those with health issues relating to repeated infection and illness.

Teenagers and older children may present with postural related problems, sport injuries, back pain, fatigue and headaches. In a still-growing body, this warrants closer examination for any underlying asymmetries as well as postural advice and exercise. The drag of tensioned tissues on a teenage body can add to the effect of mood on an already hormonal body. Osteopathic treatment may help to alleviate anxiety and mood-related conditions in children by balancing up these tensions.

Examples of conditions that may benefit from treatment:

  • Recurrent infection or illness, e.g., cough, colds, bronchiolitis
  • Mood and anxiety problems
  • Growing pains
  • Tummy pains, digestive problems
  • Asthma and breathing difficulties
  • Accidents, sports injuries
  • Ear infections
  • Learning difficulties
  • Spine and joint pains
  • Headaches
  • Sleep problems

ADULTS & ELDERLY

We believe you should not put up with pain.

Things may come right on their own, but some Osteopathic treatment will ensure a quicker and more full recovery, with minimal recurrences. Arthritic pain can be helped too. You may have some degenerative changes on xray, but Osteopathy can help get you moving better which will improve your condition.

We want to help you understand your condition and body more, and empower you to make any changes. We provide safe, natural and non-invasive treatment, tailored to the individual. In addition we may give you some home activities for management. We encourage self-reliance, not reliance on ongoing treatment.

We treat a lot more than just the spine.

INJURIES

From the accomplished athlete, to somebody trying to get back into exercise, injuries can happen. If there is restriction through the joints or tension through the tissues it may not only affect your ability to perform, but also cause further injury. Osteopathic treatment focuses on the joints, muscles, and spine. Our therapeutic treatment helps the injured tissues to align and heal, and optimise recovery.

At the early and painful stages of injury we can use very gentle and effective techniques. At later stages of recovery or when there is delayed healing, Osteopathy effectively treats supporting areas of the body to optimise mechanics to the injured tissue, and also addresses ongoing local strain patterns and rehabilitation.

We also understand well the mechanics that accidental injuries such as falls, car accidents and impact injuries have on the body. Our approach is individualised, gentle and effective at addressing these issues.

And yes we are ACC providers. So you may make an injury claim directly with us when you come for treatment, without having to see your GP first.

Some of the common sports and other injuries we see are:

  • Neck and whiplash
  • Head injuries
  • Back muscle and spine injury
  • Other muscle strains and tears
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff injuries
  • Rib injuries
  • tennis elbow, wrists
  • fractures
